Player Development

In the HFL, we strive to not only help young men develop their football skills but also their character.

We want them to compete and be successful both on and off the field.  We measure success not by wins and losses but through player improvement, individual confidence and character development.

Safety
Coaches must be certified in order to coach in the HFL. All coaches must also be approved by the site AD and pass a background check.

Coaches are taught proper hydration strategies and concussion recognition are implemented:

  • Hydration: Coaches will be stressing the importance of hydration before, during and after workouts and games and how being well hydrated benefits performance as well as reducing the risk of heat stress and illness.
  •  Concussion Recognition:  Coaches have been educated on how to recognize the warning signs of concussions and what to do if a concussion is suspected according to the CDC Heads Up initiative.

Hawk Tackling

The HFL and its coaches are fully committed to reducing head and neck injuries by adopting and teaching the Hawk Tackling techniques created by the Seattle Seahawks. This method of tackling is revolutionizing the game today and is being adopted at all levels of play.

Breakdown:  the foundational keys to Hawk Tackling include:

  • Near shoulder
  •  Near hip
  •  Eyes to the thighs
  • Wrap and squeeze
  •  Drive for 5

Practice

Each practice is designed for a low player to coach ratio giving as much individual player instruction as possible.  Practices are broken down into positional groups, so coaches and players are able to focus on skills that are applicable to where they play.

Coaches

In the HFL coaches are committed to teaching players the skills necessary to become successful players both on and off the field.  Our coaches are expected to not only instruct players in the skills of football, but also to disciple the players in their faith. We recognize the position of authority the coaches have over these young men and hold the coaches to a high standard to ensure they support the mission and vision of the HFL. The coaches must lead a lifestyle that exemplifies the discipleship fundamentals the young men will be taught.
